Among the “Out of Hand” favorites are the picture frames and serving trays made from unseaworthy fishing boats. The boats are purchased from fishermen and disassembled. Then the artist takes over. The marine colored pieces of wood are arranged harmoniously to make serving trays and picture frames with a colorful, weathered finish.
When I fist met Will Steger, I was amazed at how many plaids a person could wear at one time. I was attracted to his boat trays and took short notice of the frames. Two or three shows later, when I stopped by his booth at the gift show, he was rather insistent that the frames would go well in my store, if I covered a whole wall with them. I did it and found them very appealing to me and my customers. Later, he began adding vintage wallpaper to the wood frames, for another great look. Four years later they are still one of the first things people comment on when they come into “Out of Hand”. People often come back to add to their collection.
In keeping with my quest to determine where I find my best selling gifts, that would be one for the “gift show” category.
